Hugh Williams

Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Business Analytics @ Melbourne Business School

Hugh E. Williams has had a career in three parts as an entrepreneur, professor, and technical executive. His technical expertise is in search engines and matching technologies, web services, mobile technologies, and data science.

Hugh is a Distinguished Fellow in the Melbourne Business School, a non-executive director of Redbubble,a non-executive director of MessageMedia, an advisor at Doordash and Photobox, and an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University. He was previously the Vice President of Google Maps at Google, and he has also held executive roles at eBay, Microsoft, Tinder, and Pivotal. Prior to that, he spent over 10 years researching and developing search technologies, and 5 years running his own startup and consultancy.

He has published around 120 works, mostly in the field of Information Retrieval. He is one of the inventors of Infinite Scroll, and he holds nearly 30 US patents and has over 30 pending. He has a PhD from RMIT University in Australia.

In his spare time, Hugh likes running, cycling, and swimming. He’s a Seattle Mariners and Richmond Tigers fan. He’s also semi-active in charities: he raised US$60k for the GBS-CIDP Foundation in 2015 and he’s a financial supporter of the Humane Society of the Silicon Valley.
